PVC Pipe Curtain Rods

I have been facing a dilemma since we moved into our house. We have 6 windows in our living room, which I love! The amount of natural light is great. I
'm fairly addicted to natural light. I cannot stand a dark house. Who cares if my energy bill would be a little less each month if I closed my blinds? I NEED LIGHT!

Back to my dilemma. The window walls are so long that
it would cost a fortune to install drapery rods. Each wall is 10+ feet long. That = major money for drapery rods! I had to get creative....
Also, our windows meet in a corner, so that makes it more complicated. See the picture below.
I saw a show on HGTV that used PVC pipe for drapery rods in a room with a really long wall. That is what I would do!

Here is the price break down on PVC pipe versus regular curtain rods.
This price is what it would cost me to do 20+ feet of wall space.

1 3/8" Drapery Rods = $77.94 (from Lowes)
1 3/8" Drapery Rods = $150.00 (Bed Bath and Beyond)
1 3/8" Drapery Rods = $159.98 (Amazon.com)

or 1 1/4" PVC Pipe = $9.09

Holy Money Saver! So, PVC Pipe it was.

I went ahea
d and bought wood finials, brackets, and sconces to go with the PVC Pipe. I am in love with them. Wait....can you love something that won't love you back?? I then found some spray paint that would match the finials/sconces. I gave the PVC pipe a few coats of Valspar Velvet Brown. I realized that the PVC looked too 'matte' after the spray paint, so I also did a few coats of a clear Gloss. Can you see the difference? Wow. They are looking pretty niiiice. Would you guess they were PVC pipe? Now, the installation. What a pain. It wasn't hard, just took a while. First I installed the brackets and sconces. I then CAREFULLY slid in the PVC pipe. Your pvc pipe WILL scratch if you aren't careful. I did a few 'touch ups' on mine after installing it. See my scratch?? I then slid on my curtains....... I want to take a break from my 'PVC' post and talk about the curtains. I am in LOVE with the fabric! I looked everywhere for drapes, and couldn't find anything even close to what I wanted. So, I broke down and decided to make them myself. How to actually make them will be another post entirely. I did make them (it took 2 weeks!!!) and I think they turned out pretty sweet. I used a chocolate and cream damask, with a wide chocolate band at the bottom, and some cording in between the two fabrics. What I love the most about this fabric is the 'burlap' look them have. It makes the fabric way less formal looking. Now, back to our reguarly scheduled post..... I hot glued the finials onto the end. Here are some finished shots. I think it looks pretty fab!

Just to recap:

  14. Wow what an inexpensive idea for curtain rods! We've got a ton of windows in our house which leaves me with the same dilemma you had!

I have a couple of questions -- first, I was wondering where you got your finials and brackets? Second, I was wondering, if you hot glued the ends on, will you be able to take them down without taking them apart or are they pretty permanent? Sorry if that question doesn't make sense :)

  16. Love it! I would love to copy, but have a couple questions. Do you think the paint would scratch if you were to open/close the curtains? I need to be able to open/close them once in a while...but not too often. Also, what did you do in the corner? Can we get a close up picture there? Just wondering how you covered the ends there. Great post!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jodi-the great thing about PVC pipe is that you can buy a million different 'connectors' for it. I used a 90 degree connector in the corner. I'll post pictures. Also, I do think it will scratch if you open and close the curtains. I wasn't planning on closing mine, so it wouldn't be a problem. You could possibly cover the PVC pipe with fabric....that could be cool if you chose the right kind.....

  21. I love, love, love this idea! I've used PVC on craft projects in the past, but never thought to use it like this! If you use a spray paint specifically made for plastic (like Krylon Fusion) it won't scratch. Though you have to let it cure for a week (I am so impatient!)

  55. I think this is a great idea. I need to get a few dollars together for this, and find some fabric..
opinion - I have 2 hugeish windows, close together like yours, do I / should I buy enough fabric to actually cover all of the window area, or just enough to make a pretty decor??

ALSO I think using a spray paint for plastics, like Krylon fusion, would help the scratch issues. you can use that as the finish color, or just use it as a base color, and then you can spray with whatever paint you wish.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Amanda,
Since I have blinds, I never plan on actually using my curtains to cover my windows. I just did enough to look decorative. I think it looks fine. Also, I had a few people leave me tips about the spray paint for plastic. Definitely the way to go! Wish I had known it existed before this project :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I attached my finials with hot glue. It is permanent enough that it won't fall off, but if you ever need to take them down, it just pops right off. I have used this method on another curtain rod in my house also, it seems to be holding up great! Hope this helps!

I bought the fabric at a store called Home Fabrics. I'm putting their link in this comment if you want to find a location near you. I can't say enough about how AWESOME this store is! They sell all home dec fabric for CHEAP! I got the fabric I used for $5 a yard, and it wasn't even on sale! If you've ever shopped for home dec fabric, you know what a steal that is! Also, I got the finials and brackets at Lowe's. I'm pretty sure they still carry them. Here is the fabric link:

  97. Holy Crowbar Batman!!!

I've been so depressed lately because I have the same problem. Huge front window and a limited budget - a very limited budget.

Yet, I sooooo want 2.5" (maybe) diameter wood curtain rods.

The best I could find was at Lowes, and even at that the rods and hardware were going to run me a couple hundred.

So I set the whole project aside for a week and let it all fade,

    . . . from my thoughts.

Then tonight I was online and the thought occured! PVC PIPE!!!!

So, I hit Lowe's website and checked on pricing for 12' long 2 and 3 inch pvc pipe and I almost cried! I couldn't believe how inexpensive it was. But, I needed assurance. So once again, I hit the netterworld and found your site and saw how you put the whole shebang together!

    And, it looks mahvolessssss dahlng!

So, now I gotta get me down to the Lowes Sancturay of Impoverished Home Decorators.

For example, by negotiating drug prices directly with pharmaceutical companies negotiating standard fees with the medical profession, or reducing unnecessary health care costs. Remember, once you have started eating most of your food raw, your energy level will be a lot higher, you will feel a lot healthier and cooked food will have less appeal.
